FAMILY :: PANDANACEAE

Pandanus amaryllifolius is a true cultigen, and is believed to have been domesticated in ancient times. It is sterile and can only reproduce vegetatively through suckers or cuttings. The plant is characterized by long, flavorful, scented leaves and multiple aerial roots. It’s quite unusual and distinct in appearance.
It requires tropical or sub tropical growing conditions and likes moisture and rich soil. It likes 5 – 8 hours of sun a day but it will also grow well in partial shade or in a south facing window.
The fragrant, scented leaves are widely used in Thailand and Southeast Asia as a flavoring agent in a wide variety of local cuisines, with the flavor variously referred to as floral, sweet, grassy and vanilla-like.
There are many reported traditional medicinal uses of pandan ranging from curing impotency to relieving headaches.

It grows well in most of Mexico.
